Display Expressions Tab
BoxPress SmartExpressions are famous for a reason: they are modular and their segments are controlled by bools, and thus by checkboxes, and this, finally, is what makes them controllable by the SmartExpression Control Panel.
In order to provide such ease, the underlying $DisplayExpression must be sophisticated. The Display Expressions Tab is the place to dig in, if you dare.
The DE Tab contains the different display expressions used by the various prototypes.

Highlighted areas invite modification. Remove (original) to create an interesting numbering effect for Imagemaps. And change DescendentCount to ChildCount to change the what is counted by the SmartExpression.
