Suggestibility

The ability of beliefs and behavior to be influenced by suggestion (command, linguistic presence). Also, increased responsiveness to social cues. Subjects in trance are likely to identify external commands as coming from themselves, a phenomenon called hypnotic source amnesia. This allows subjects to act on other-sourced commands as if they were self-sourced. Related to dissociation of agency from command.

Suggestibility is enhanced in hypnosis. Because of their intense absorption in the trance experience, hypnotized individuals usually accept instructions uncritically. Hypnotized individuals are not deprived of their will, but rather, have suspended the usual conscious editing function that raises the question, “Why should I?” when an instruction is given.
