The Invisible Man

The Invisible Man. Written by R. C. Sherriff & H. G. Wells (book). Directed by James Whale. Carl Laemmle Jr., 1933.

Claude Rains became central to my life during all those years from the age of 12 or 13 when I saw The Invisible Man, on up through my high school days, because almost all boys are paranoid. There’s the macho thing of the “you against the world, the world against you” and the Invisible Man says, “I’m gonna conquer the world.” And every boy worth his salt sees that character and becomes Claude Rains, becomes the Invisible Man, and wants to have that power.
