Although Christians in the early Middle Ages viewed monkeys as symbols of the devil, in medieval and Renaissance art they stand-in for humans. Special uses:

• An ape holding an apple signified the fall of man
• A fettered monkey represented humans enmeshment due to worldly clinging

Monkeys were also used represent the imitative arts of painting and sculpting in order to connote the secondhand artificial nature of human (non-)creativity.
