LinkMap vs FillMap

Here is an ordinary LinkMap

I made it by making a new note and setting three key attributes. The attributes we will be using are part of the Keys•Image set, so run that stamp first.

Here are the steps:

  1. I set $bpMapView to the name of my Mapped Container. This happens to be MapMaker: Galen to Mesmer so I enter that.
  2. I set $bpMapJPG to the name of my JPEG file (inside img/IMAGEMAPS). I saved my Tinderbox Copy View as A_to_Mesmer.jpg and put this inside a folder called psycho_TB (which is inside img/MAGEMAPS). Since I created a sub-folder, I set $bpMapJPG to psycho_TB/A_to_Mesmer rather than simply A_to_Mesmer.
  3. I give the LinkMap a name by setting $bpMapTitle to Influence Map: Galen to Mesmer.
  4. Done.

The only real work involved is making the JPEG. If you memorize the steps, it takes 20 seconds to execute. The instructions are here.

Here is an ordinary FillMap

  1. I duplicated the note above and then changed its prototype, to fillmap_note.
  2. Done.

By default, BoxPress includes SmartButtons for all the clickable (but non-linking) areas in FillMaps because you may, after seeing the little preview in the sidebar, want to visit the actual page and explore from there. You can turn this off, of course, with the NOKIDS export option.

Here is a wide LinkMap

Here is a LinkMap with notes arranged in a free-form style with adornments. As is proper, adornments are not clickable areas. This LinkMap uses the WIDE $blogExpOpt:

Here is an ordinary LinkGraffle

Here is a LinkMap generated in OmniGraffle. I will follow Damian Karass who calls these LinkGraffles. OmniGraffle has the best interface for image placement and adjustment on the market. Their swatch system is ingenious and very forgiving. I have given clickable notes a shadow to help them stand out:

Here is an ordinary FillGraffle

Here is a FillMap generated in OmniGraffle. Damian Karass calls these FillGraffles so I’ll use that term here. Again, you can remove the SmartButtons by adding the NOKIDS export option. Again, to make a LinkGraffle into a FillGraffle, just change its prototype to fillmap_note.

The instructions for making LinkGraffles and FillGraffles are here.

The only rule of BoxPress imagemaps is that the

Originals must export
For clickable areas to work, the original notes must export. Since Map Views are ways-of-connecting notes that are self-standing in other contexts, I usually make my imagemap Map Views out of aliases. As a bonus, I can store all my imagemap Map Views inside a dedicated imagemap bucket I keep off to the side. The originals are topics inside a linear outline context somewhere in my pages or posts. The genius of the alias-made Map View is that you can rethink these topics inside a sandbox that never touches the original (linear) position of the original idea.
