blind

Adequate-symbolic: Adequate knowledge is symbolic or “blind” because, while it is “clear relative to a complex” [MFL 63], so that we can recognize the complex all the way down, “we do not attain a view of the totality of clear ‘marks’ individually and as a whole.” We “can move among” these marks, “but we do not see them” [MFL 62–63]. Here, then, we possess the adequate—but still as an enumeration. We know its marks serially, we “move among” each determining component. All is there, all that we need to generate the whole by piecemeal, serial application of the natures’ symbol-functions; but not the whole itself.
