Judgment
The entirety of the Kantian positive metaphysics is contained in the unpacking of judgment. Judgment grand unifying
is world-making and experience and perception and grammatical intentionality and grammar-infused imaginary re-constitution of the physical (the categories). Kant’s metaphysics is metaphysics light—it is only about a very thin layer of total reality. It is the what-happens when a human receptive field is perturbed by spatially external force.
- The subject is a taut impact-amplifying receptive field belonging to a self-motivating negentropic system that speak-grasps physical objects in its understanding. The “matter” that this system operates on are patterns of triggering pattern-senders that activate action, including the secreting of pain that motivates the subject and seems internal and prior to it. Willing and perceiving are both effects of internal bodily motion, some of which is amplified receptive field impact. The organism sets up ultra-sensitive zones along its exterior and extremities. There are zone that indicate There, presence! to the executive coordinating system over all the (very small range) of voluntary action. This single coordinator, this unity above which there is no other, is the real unitary apperceiver. And this total internal action oriented to the re-presented construct made from all the amplified sensory inputs, insofar as it intersects the voluntarily directed and languaged intentionality of the organism, is what Kant means by judgment. Judgment is concerted semantic effort driven by the mandatory and species-wide double-grunt syntax and its metaphysics of kind-by-containment. Kant says the truth-making of the predication relation is simple generation. The predicate concept, like all concepts, is a rule for image making. The subject concept is a simple pointer, though is may carry a predicate in tandem, which I indicate with parentheses, as in This (leaf) is green, which resolves into This is a leaf and This is green with the caveat that we mean for leaf to fall under green and not vice versa. That is the internal act.
Meanwhile, in the world cobbled from sense input, there is a physical object—a body (subspace) of perduring counter-force that moves and changes continuously in a way that is also a magnitude. [This brief description explicates all of Kant’s categories in a tidy size.] This perceptual object, we notice, we decompose into ways of variation that can be imagined.
And that’s Kant’s theory:
The object decomposes into images, and
We make images from rules.
Kant’s innovation is that some of our words refer to the arising of the object in the first place. That is, to the organization of the amplified perturbations into a concentrated target of intentional epistemic focus. That is, some of our image-making words make the very form of the object itself. That is, some of our image-making words are rules of the act of judgment itself. The rules of object-making (that is, for making the generic physical object, or transcendental object) are the rules of judgment, or the rules of organizing subjective motion in relation to voluntary and proclivity-driven world-directed action.
Kant’s focus is the stuff going on inside the organism that turns the inputs into a stable focus of judgment, the object-directed and object-making cognition. This internal act can be known to the extent that we can do it explicitly and with premeditation.
Phenomenally, judgment is a set of imaginary postings and doings that constitute our inner replication of objective being. We carry out all sorts of internal exercises to serve as proxies in the made (and so meaningful) version of the object. The known object is known because it is filled-in by positing, and so filled-in with selfhood, and so every part is “known.” Every part is subject-sourced—the effect of self-directed act (rule-directed but the rule is self chosen). In physical perception, the form of the object is not a static image, but a running activity. That is it!
