The “inner striving” which for Aristotle defines substance is just the accusative flip-side of the perduring of intentionality that strives to find the substantial thing, the potential threat, the stable food locus, “in space,” which means also in distance-motion and derivatively in time, from the onslaught of photonic and other material bombardment.
