Sphere of magick

The sphere of magick, or agentive potency, is the extent of our intent. Some acts seems to stem directly from pure self-caused fiat. These include:

  1. Willing. Can will be willed? Or: is will willed? Willing is always going on. It is the deepest action and is usually identified with the core self. Can awareness penetrate behind our willing? But the act of penetration is also willing. Willing is always prior. If there is a core self, it would be willing. Recalcitrance level: NONE.
  2. Thinking. Thinking is willing that determines imagination from concepts. If willing is free, so is thinking. When I create scenarios, compare things, make inferences, I am forced to chose from among concepts I already have. I chose concepts and then posit images or movies. Thinking is limited by my knowledge of construction (see Imagination, below), my skill in construction, my vocabulary, my working memory, and urges that push certain contents by association. Recalcitrance level: LOW.
  3. Imagining. Imagining is rendering concepts as images. Imagining is limited to past empirical concepts (see Thinking, above), the a priori concepts of physical objectivity as such, Euclidean space, and time. Recalcitrance level: LOW.
  4. Voluntary muscles. I can move certain muscles in my body with such intimacy that this motion is properly magickal—a change that is effected by will. Recalcitrance level: MEDIUM-LOW. This level is important because effort enters into it. Effort enters into (2) and (3) but the counter-force here is not complexity but inertia that leads to real chemical exhaustion. The effort required to do 50 pushups is different from the effort required to hold a collection of pictures in the mind’s eye. Recalcitrance level: LOW–HIGH.
  5. States of affairs outside the body. Will can use the body to change the world. There is great variability here. Social factors enter in. In monied societies, humans with money can manifest food with less effort than those without money. Social status also determines efficacy; the will of VPs is more efficacious than the will of a temp worker. And so on. Recalcitrance level: LOW–HIGH.
