Classical liberalism is a political ideology and a branch of liberalism which advocates civil liberties under the rule of law with an emphasis on economic freedom.

Developed from the ideas John Locke, Thomas Malthus, David Ricardo, and grew out of the economics of Adam Smith and the belief in natural law, utilitarianism, and progress.

Today it is called economic liberalism and is the basis of libertarianism.
