Discomfort-dodging procrastination

Note: I think it is a mistake to put this on the same type level as the other categories. This is because discomfort dodging is a mark of every category. The categories ought to be called classes, so that we could call discomfort dodging a phylum, which better captures its role.

Postulates

  • Pain is the essence of motivation.
  •  Pain is the original motivator that had the whole-organism enveloping executive agency over voluntary (loco-)motion as its patient.

Conjecture

  • It I also conceivable that pain is the power or force that it is because effort requires the power and force that it does. [Another Sosa moment here. Effort could not be physical force-like work unless it were at war against its own bodily inertia, unless its own habitual, samskaric, and inertial mass were not the very thing it sought to overwhelm. The innermost struggle of life is the war between the beloved ideal (and its attendant subjectivity) and the mass of habit-preserving habits. Habits develop their own hypercycles. They are memes—types of form that cause (by some astonishing means) the performance of actions that sustain and sometimes even multiply them.] Effort has the quality that puts agency itself in the position of cause—a cause that fails unless a real magnitude of effort is applied. The qual-component of effort as the pain of mustering energy against real physical counterforce indicates that agency is a real power. And we do want to ask (with Sosa), “How can what fights against the real-force physical proclivities of the body, in its innermost nerves, muscles, and hormones, be itself composed of the physical?”
