CSH: Heidi was talking about a girl who was outside that was on the phone with a team of people watching and texting her. And my thought was, “The reason this is repulsive is we think that a normal human is a body with a single unitary will. So when you see that a single body is being driven by seven or eight independent wills, you’re scared.”
Heidi: It was more than seven or eight.
CSH: This scares us because we have an allegiance to the principle, “one body, one mind.” It’s kinda like the American cowboy ethic but I think here we’re tapping into a more extreme, even religious level of concern.
Communism, teamwork, tribal community. Even though, in this instance, the legion is appearing electronically, it still appears as a threat. It’s the Borg threat from Star Trek TNG. Remember the Borg episodes?
CSH: There is a popular phobia in sci-fi that, in the future, the unity or independence of the self will be destroyed, and every person will just be a functionary of a group mind. Have you seen Invasion of the Body Snatchers?
Heidi: Have you seen any of the Black Mirror episodes?
