Tutorial: Making a single-depth OutMap from originals

You can also use the MapMaker: OutMap stamp to arrange originals. In a Map View, originals can only be of the same outline depth. But the MapMaker•OutMap stamp can still be of use since it will arrange them all into a nice grid.

Select the container you want to add a LinkMap to and change its prototype to outmaker_note:

Here are the originals in their container.

Enter the container’s own name into $outSource and then set $OutRowMax to your desired column length:

This column length goes to 11.
This column length goes to 11.

Then run the MapMaker•OutMap stamp to impose the new, cleaner arrangement:

After running the ^do(Stamp,
After running the MapMaker: OutMap stamp.

Now make a new adornment and name it origin_adorn. Then set its prototype to either outmaker_adorn or makmaker_adorn. When you do, the ugly name will “disappear.” Leave it that way if you like, or use the Inspector to set its Display Expression to something else. Then resize the adornment to your liking:

If you don’t like the scrawny font, select all and run one of the MapStyle stamps:

After running the ^do(Stamp,
After running the MapStyle•Basic stamp, which improves the font display and removes the SmartExpression count segment.

After running the MapStyle•Tiles stamp, which applies a different styling.

When you are happy with your work, do Edit > Copy View as Image, open the Mac OS program Preview, and do File > New from Clipboard:

After hitting ⇧⌘C, switching to Preview, and then hitting ⇧⌘N.

Now change the Format to JPEG and save somewhere inside img/IMAGEMAPS. I’m using a subfolder here:

Set Format and save somewhere inside img/IMAGEMAPS/.

Now zoom in a bit so you can place your crop rectangle exactly on the outside of the border:

Zoom in so you can see.

Drag from upper left tip to lower right.

Then hit ⌘K to crop and ⌘S to save again:

If you switch to Outline View you’ll notice that your note colors have been changed. No problem—just select them and run the Clean•Look stamp to return all appearance elements to their defaults.

Now select the container note again and change its prototype to mapmaker_note so you can access the key attributes that let you construct the HTML Imagemap. Set the $blogMapView to the container’s own name, and $blogMapJPG to the name of the JPEG you cropped and saved in Preview:

Now your LinkMap will export properly.
